Itinerary
Day One
Carl-von-Stahl Haus (1728 m). After arriving in Munich we will take our transfer to Hinterbrand (1062 m) where we start our hike. From here, the trail begins gently, winding across lush alpine meadows framed by forested slopes and distant limestone peaks. The trail leads us via Mitterkaseralm, an inviting spot for late lunch. In good weather we can extend the route with a detour to the Pfaffenkogel, a rocky summit where the final meters are secured by chains and require a short scramble, our first taste of true alpine flair. If conditions are less favourable, there is a wide forest road directly to Carl-von-Stahl Haus.
Day Stats
Distance: 5 km | Elevation Gain: 700 m | Descent: 150m
Moving Time: 3 hours | Total Day Duration: 4 hours
Day Two
Gotzenalm (1685 m). The Schneibstein route climbs steadily from the hut to the broad summit plateau, where sweeping panoramas open up over the Berchtesgaden Alps. With a bit of luck, we may find ibex grazing along the rocky ridges. From the summit, the path descends across open karst terrain, mountain meadows, and past a lake to swim in, before meeting the approach to the Gotzenalm.
Day Stats
Distance: 12 km | Elevation Gain: 900 m | Descent: 950m
Moving Time: 5.5 hours | Total Day Duration: 8-9 hours
Day Three
Wasseralm (1416 m). After leaving the lush pastures of the Gotzenalm, the trail narrows into a small mountain path with a short, slightly exposed section secured by ropes. Here a steady step and a head for heights are helpful, but since the stretch is brief, we can take it calmly and safely before descending into the secluded valley of the Wasseralm.
Day Stats
Distance: 10km | Elevation Gain: 500m | Descent: 750m
Moving Time: 4 hours | Total Day Duration: 6-7 hours
Day Four
Ingolstadter (2132 m). This route climbs steeply out of the valley, winding over rocky steps and narrow switchbacks before reaching the Totes Weibl pass. Beyond the saddle, the trail enters the edge of the Steinerne Meer (literally means “Stone Sea”) a vast high-alpine plateau formed from ancient limestone that was once the floor of a prehistoric ocean. Its rugged, wave-like karst formations create a striking, almost lunar landscape. The path threads through this rough, stony terrain and across a few short, exposed sections before descending on a steeper, uneven trail that eventually leads down toward the tranquil Funtensee.
Day Stats
Distance: 10km | Elevation Gain: 1000m | Descent: 800m
Moving Time: 5 hours | Total Day Duration: 8-9 hours
Day Five
Purzlbach. We’ll wake up at Ingolstädter Haus and set out on our final hike, following beautiful alpine trails as we make our way to Purzlbach. This last stretch offers a chance to soak up the mountain scenery one final time before descending and meeting our transfer back to Munich Airport, where you can either catch your flight home or stay on to explore more of the city.
Day Stats
Distance: 11km | Elevation Gain: 50m | Descent: 1100m
